Bio

Dr. Lacher is Professor of Surgery and Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at University Hospital Leipzig and the University of Leipzig. He has led the department since 2015 and serves as Ärztlicher Direktor of the Klinik und Poliklinik für Kinderchirurgie. His clinical work focuses on minimally invasive pediatric surgery, neonatal surgery, colorectal surgery, pediatric urology, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and congenital malformations.

Dr. Lacher completed medical studies at the University of Cologne and subsequently trained in pediatrics and surgery in Germany. He completed fellowship training in pediatric endosurgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham before joining Hannover Medical School as an attending pediatric surgeon. He later became Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Leipzig.

His academic interests include inflammatory bowel disease, necrotizing enterocolitis, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, colorectal surgery, and the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques. He serves in leadership positions within European and international pediatric surgery organizations and has contributed extensively to surgical education. Dr. Lacher is Founder and CEO of Stiftung Kinderchirurgie, a foundation supporting pediatric surgical care, training, and international outreach initiatives. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of European Journal of Pediatric Surgery Reports. His research portfolio includes more than 6,600 citations and an h-index of 36. In 2025, he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his humanitarian work and international pediatric surgical education efforts.
