Retrieval of an infrarenal IVC filter
Indications for IVC filter removal include when a patient with an existing IVC filter is now anticoagulated or no longer is at risk for pulmonary embolism, thus the IVC filter is no longer indicated.
Contraindications for IVC filter removal include when a patient with an existing IVC filter has continued risk for pulmonary embolism or cannot be anticoagulated due to anticoagulation complications or contraindications.
IVC filter retrieval setup includes equipment used for access to the internal jugular vein (IJ), equipment for digital subtraction angiography, as well as an IVC filter retrieval kit that includes a snare and sheath.
Patients are selected for IVC filter retrieval by a multidisciplinary team, often involving cardiology, primary care, and interventional radiology.
